In nxt 15 mins we got of the highway and started riddin on the bad road which would lead us to Hubli. The patch of road was really bad and the dust around was makin it more difficult in the scorching sun. The road was being renovated so construction material’s were all around the place. It was a nightmare (Im goin to repeat this again & again from now on…..). For a moment I thought, I did the right thing by not takin the Uni. Potholes everywhere & wht not, I had a opinion tht Hubli was a important town & was not expecting such poor connectivity. Finally we reached Hubli around 11.30 and for much of relief to everyones wallet we found a ATM. After pouring some cash in we ready to hit the bad roads again, really bad ones. Vikram had shopped some sweets for his mom, I don’t knw how did he expect them to reach back home. We were now finding our way to Hampi on the by lanes of Hubli. The language barrier was persistent and very visible, an advise to all travlin to south plz learn a bit of the language or ………. Luckily Vikram knew a bit of malyali which came handy. From the looks Hubli is a small town with nothing much to talk about. This is the last town where one can find ny modern aminities like ATM etc. The nxt town on the route with a proper hotel or a ATM is Hospet which is around 150 km’s away, so keep cash handy in case of emergencies. No petrol pumps on this route accept plastic money (credit cards).

After an hour of struggle we were on the state highway which would take us to Hospet. The road was persistently bad and the hot and humid climate was dehydrating us faster than we thought. More than eighteen hours of continuous ridin was takin itz tool on the body. I was really very tired and sleepy. As my dad who’s a doc says “Human body can only work efficiently for 8 hrs continuously after tht it would not allow you to do you’re the task at hand with precision. Take a power nap of 2hrs after every 8 hrs.” Sometimes you need to listen to your parents, it helps. One thing I would like to repeat at this point is wht Anup keeps on sayin continuously “Drink as much water as you can. Keep on drinking.”, unless you are in a desert this would help. My FastTrack was showin 3 in afternoon and yet Hampi was a distant dream 100km’s away. We stopped at a small shack by the SH for food. I jst wanted to reach Hampi as soon as possible and was a bit annoyed by this halt. Jst settled for tea while the others had a proper mean, it took us half hour to settle the bill & get out meanwhile I had a 30 min powernap which helped a lot. Now I wanted to ride nonstop to Hampi. It was 3.30 and only 3hrs more left for photo everyone wanted to cover km’s as fast as possible.

Itz not Goa itz Hampi

Itz not Goa itz Hampi

I snatched winzee’s bike keys from his hand and was riddin the pulsar now. The road was really bad not at all a state highway feel. Karnataka gov should do something bout this, itz a matter of prestige. Really bad experience on roads., the bike was jst bangin into pot holes. Not a good thing at all. After riddin some distance I realized I had lost all the others and was quiet ahead of them. So as it was already late instead of waitin for everyone I decided to go on & meet them at Hampi. Hampi was around a 2 hrs distance but the top speed on thos crappy roads was jst 50 – 60. Finally after an hour I could see a black ZMA on my RVM, atleast someone was able to catch up. Spidy & me took a break for 2 mins & then started riddin again. I wanted to reach Hampi as soon as possible before the sun sets. After the potholes it was time for the speed breakers, ohhhh it was hell down under. It was square of wht Mumbai was 2 years back, no no it was cube. My *** was pain like hell, we were standin & ridin the bikes.

Me & spidy we riddin together for about 30 mins wen we first saw the magnificent bolders of Vijaynagar, the lost kingdom. It was a stone quarry bout the big rocks on the mountains were jst magnificent. Took some snaps & moved on. It was around 4.30 now & Hospet was around 20kms distance. Now Hospet had something very unique in store for us tht we didn’t ever imagine & will not forget. Dedicated speed breakers for each house, a bit exaggerated. But in a 3-4 km stretch in the city there were around 25-30 speed breakers, my poor bike. The city like ny other city in India is fully chaotic, but the people were helpful enough to guide us en-route Hampi.

Filly after a long journey of more than 14 hours and 750+ kms we were finally standin in front of the gates to the capital of the Vijayanagar, Hampi. The huge white gates and jst too awesome & inviting, I bet they looked more royal back during the kings. We were at the gates but the city was more 4 kms from there. Spidy & me decided to reach Hampi rather than waitin for the rest. In 10 mins we were in Hampi & I yet remember the roads, beautiful ones. There is small slope uphill that leads you to Hampi & on the other side is heaven. Really the first thing that you see is a garden & in between there is a big idol of Ganpati. The scene was mesmerizing & we two poor souls were lost in the beauty of ruins around us which were once the pillar of the capital city. Without wasting ny time we parked the bikes and tried to contact Anup, but no one was pickin the call. It was around 5.30 now and the sun was ready to go to bed. Received a msg from anup tellin us to take as much snaps as we could as there we goin to miss the party.

I took the camera & started shottin everything I could. We had one hour to shoot wht we could. Hampi is too big to be covered in a day in an hour it was really not possible. I would advise nyone planning to visit hampi to at least remove 3 days, thtz the minimum.
& also take a guide along you can find many in the city. All the photos that you see are of a place near the entrance of Hampi, jst imagine how beautiful Hampi is. Spidy dis a bit of poser stuff & we ended up wid some cool pics. There are a lot of monkeys around so one needs to be a bit careful. After about 30 mins the gang was there, regrouped and in 2 mins we were back on the bike. We decided to take a look around and pick up some spot to explore. Finally we found a place to hang out. Parked the bikes and shiva & spidy we jumpin from one rock to another & then the macho Anup also tried to pull some tricks. It was really funny. Then suddenly from somewhere the police came in and we had a tough time after that, lets not get into the details. But it was a bit shockin scene there. I would advice everyone visitin Hampi to get them registered with the local Hampi police sation & knw wht can be photographed & wht not. It was dark by the time the issue was sorted out & the other had missed Hampi. I promised myself there & then tht ill be back to explore Hampi with a better camera and lots of time on my hand.

We clicked some snaps in dark & reached Hospet is search of food & shelter. Hospet has some deent hotels where one can stay for the night for some 1000 Rs. The food at the local restraint was also good. The nxt day morning we leaft for Mumbai & I was at home by 12.30 midnight.

We took a break ahead of satara phata. It was chillin n my fingers were numb after ridin for 100 km in cold. Tried to contact Rossi & this time luck was with us, he answered the tring tring. He was not far away, so we decided to wait for him. In few mins we could hear the K&N roarin and the P180’s headlight in dark, rossi was here. Where we took 3 breaks Rossi had covered the distance non-stop jst to catch us, cheers to Rossi. He was cold & tired. I gave him the extra pair of gloves tht I had, bright yellow ones :-D. As rossi was too tired Anup volentired to ride the 180 with rossi as a pillion, he jst needs a reason to ride a higher cc bike :-D. Hopped on the bikes & started ridin again, I guess it was around 4 in the morn now. We reached Kolhapur around 6.00, 1 hr late frm our schedule. The ambition was thirsty for fule, so we parked by a BP pump on outskirts of kolhapur to refule it. I would recommed this pump as a pit stop for nyone on this route, its well equiped for ur needs from snacks to loo, if ur used to sleepin on grass ull love this place. Everyone was tired n exausted so we decided to have small at the pump, razor n anup were the first to lay on the grass:-D. Had a long nap for an hour, so now we were 2 hrs behind schedule. Nxt stop belgaum.

As we had lost time we decided to cover more ground by ridin non stop till Hubli. The roads were cherry on cream sort of thin, too good. Thx gov for thinkin out of box. If nyone wanted to stop for somethin instead of the whole group breakin we decided the individual would zoom past the lead cover some distance take a break n join the herd back. This trick worked n we were able to reach Hubli by 11.00, covered around 200 kms. The roads were jst too good after Kolhapur, the only obstacles were speed breakers of the Toll Plaza’s. Did some insane ridddin on the ZMA. Even with cross winds & a pillion shiva manages the pull the ZMA to 130+ (Saddle were there too filled with mineral water). For some distance I too tried the ZMA with Shiva as a pillion (I guess it feels a bit weired to sit on ur own bike as a pillion). Didn’t manage to achive those speeds but was not able to stop the Razor on his RTR zoom past me………. A bit embarrassing to see a 160cc overtaking a 225cc, sheer lack of experience. We stopped some place before Hubli and regrouped. There was a black hole in my stomach n was feeling a bit tried due to it. So we all decided to have breakfast, guess wht, Anup & Shiva had stocked bread butter jam in the saddlebags. The only problem was the spoon had been misplaced somewhere, so instead of using our fingers to apply the jam we dipped the bread in it and ate it like idli sambar, hehehe. Had some banana’s tooo.

Title: Hampi- A Stone Dream (part 1)
Location: Hampi, Karnataka
Date: 11 Oct, 2008

Hampi, WTF. Where is this place with such a weird name for the first thing in my mind, humping. Anup discussed about hampi a month back on our Rann of Kutch ride. It was supposed to be his last ride. Siting on the salty barren land of Rann we started discussing bout Hampi. Anup described it as “A Stone Dream”. As usual I said no for the ride, this is wht I always do. Had too much work at office and MCA exams were in Dec and the ride was a 2 day thing. Anup wanted to do it in the first week of Dec and it was supposed to be his last long ride for a while.

So Hampi, finally i knew it was stone dream. Nov flew with work at office and the photo processing for the kutch ride (Which are yet to be posted). The ride was in the first week of dec and my exams were also starting from 3rd Dec. No was i could have done the ride. During the Kutch ride also my prac exams were goin on. I had been to shivneri before the exams with anup and decided that this is goin to be my last ride for th year.

But i guess the riding season was not supposed to end there. My exams got postponed and anup convinced me tht im goin to miss somethin big (He was right..). Finally i decided tht ill be commin for the ride as a pillion, 1600 KM as a pillion was hurtin my a** even befor the start. There were many reasons i counldnt take my bike. I sat on friday in office to stdy the whole route map and feed in the details to Anup for all the processing. Looking at the distance we decided we would leave on friday night. A weekend ride to Hampi with five riders and four bikes.

Sleepin early mornin.

If u guys knw me ive an reputation of being late, not tht im proud of. This time too i was unable to change tht perception. We decided to meet @ panvel by 9.00 n leave by 9.30. My last call to anup revealed tht he was yet stuck with firing ppl at office and would be late. We were supposed to leave @ 9.30 & anup would catch us on the highway. As decided i left from my place @ 6.00 and was supposed to meet razor, spidy & winzee at goregaon and from there would ride a pillon till panvel. But the railways had a diff plan the trains were late, it took me more thn 1hr to cover the distance thts usually take not more thn 15 mins. So i was late again. Started frm goregaon @ 8.30 crawling through the stalled traffic at powai. Anup had reached panve before ur and was waitin near McD with Shiva, i guess he knws the art of time travle :-D:-D. As we would take more time to reach, anup n shiva decided to move on. We crossed panvel and superman called me. I mean MeIsRossi(Vikram), not tht he can fly or wear his innerwear outside but on his K&N loaded Pulsar 180 he zooms past u superman would do. He was also taggin along with us to Hampi. As we were late we didnt wait & instructed him to catch us enroute.

We regrouped with anup n shiva @ khopoli some kms off Lonavla. Shiva was geared up with his new jacket, he needs a new helmet though. We stuffed our stomach with vadas & stuffed the shivas saddle bags with bottles of water (wen i asked for chilled water, the old man over the counter handed me a bottle full of ice). It was chillin in khopoli & i was not wearin my gloves. We started 15 mins later from khopoli and headed non stop towards pune. The aim was to reach Hampi by noon, none of u knew if it would be possible. We reached outskirts of Pune & and too right to catch the Bangy highway. Took a break at the junction, a small save ur ass break. There were some camoflashed test vehicles at the corner. Spidy as usual ran towards the cars like a small child curious to find whts in the box. As we had expected the drivers didnt budge instead they ran away with a fear tht the lens would capture the car. The only info we had was it was a tata product. Even after waitin for 15 mins there was no sign of Rossi around, I last spoke to him 2 hrs back & I was worried now as his cell was unreachable. Hopin tht Rossi would catch us we headed towards Satara. The six lane highway is beautiful. The is an viaduct on enroute which is fab, the walls of the mountain lit by the movin lights of the vehicles plying on the highway, a moon lit lake on left and a valley covered by shadows on right. Jst imagine. I was comfertably sittin as a pillion with Shiva enjoyin the scene whereas the rest of the herd was fightin the high beam deamons on the road. Anup was leadin & razor was handlin the tail.

As everyone was hungry 100 kms later we parked ourselfs at a very small dhaba. Ordered tea for the warm feel in the cold surroundins. The dhaba had the traditional bed (dont knw the name

Anup jst hopped on one an lay down. The cold weather and non stop ridin was showin itz colors in jst 300 km, atleast more 400 to go. Ordered tea n food, which was served im bout 15 mins. Itz my assumption tht you get yummy yummy food at small places. Even after havin toasts before food we were yet hungry for more rotis. I would recommend nyone visitin this area to have a plate of sev bhaji on dinner table, itz jst awesome (jst dont ask for the spicy version, ull need a fleet of tankers on standby). The owner of the dhaba offered us two beds to lie down. Who would miss such a chance, anup n razor were the first to hop on. Took a nano nap for 15 mins, charged the phones, paid the bill n hit the highway. Jst there was one change Anup was on the ZMA & i was riding the 7 year old Ambition with K&N. At first I was a bit skeptical bout bikes abilities, but in few mins I realised why itz so diff to catch Anup even on the Amby. The bike was roarin on the highway, K&N effect. As im used to the unicorn im neither used to sound or vibes. It was altogether an delighted experience. Under a star studded sky we were cruisin towards Hampi.
